KPK: The Practice of Bribery for New Student Admissions Has Been Happening for A Long Time

Acting KPK spokesman Ali Fikri said investigators from the Corruption Eradication Commission suspected that the practice of bribery in accepting new students through independent channels at the University of Lampung (Unila) had been going on for a long time.

"It is true, allegations of this kind of practice in this case have been suspected for a long time and certainly concern us all," said Ali Fikri in Jakarta, Monday (22/8/2022).

Ali said the KPK would look into the matter in the investigation process.

"KPK will explore and develop later in the investigation process. We hope that if there are practices like this in other places in our education, stop these kinds of corrupt practices," said Ali.

Previously, Deputy Chairperson of the KPK, Nurul Ghufron, revealed that his institution had reviewed that the admission of new students through independent channels was less transparent and measurable.

"KPK has indeed conducted a study and assessed that the admission of new students through the independent pathway is less measurable, less transparent, and less certain," said Ghufron at the KPK Building, Jakarta, Sunday (21/8).

The KPK has named the Chancellor of Unila Karomani (KRM) together with the Deputy Chancellor I for Academic Affairs Unila Heryandi (HY), and the Chair of the Unila Senate Muhammad Basri (MB) as suspected recipients in the alleged bribery case related to the admission of new student candidates at Unila in 2022.

While the donor is the private sector Andi Desfiandi (AD).

In the construction of the case, the KPK said that in 2022, Unila as one of the state universities will participate in organizing the National Selection for State University Entrance (SNMPTN). In addition to the SNMPTN, Unila has opened a special path, namely the Independent Selection to Enter the University of Lampung (Simanila) for the 2022 Academic Year.

KRM, who serves as the Chancellor of Unila for the 2020-2024 period, has the authority, one of which is related to the mechanism for implementing Simanila.

During the Simanila process, the KPK suspected that KRM was active to be directly involved in determining the graduation of the Simanila participants by ordering HY and Budi Sutomo and involving MB to participate in personal selection regarding the ability of students' parents.

If you want to be declared passed, you can be assisted by submitting a sum of money other than the official money paid according to the mechanism determined by the university.

In addition, KRM allegedly gave special roles and tasks to HY, MB, and Budi Sutomo to collect an amount of money agreed upon with the parents of the selection participants who had previously passed based on the assessment that had been arranged by KRM.

As for the nominal amount of money agreed upon between the KRM parties, it is suspected that the amount varies with a minimum range of Rp. 100 million to Rp. 350 million for each parent of the selection participants who want to graduate.
