Joe Biden is gearing up for the 2024 United States election. However, this move could be hindered if TikTok is blocked.
Biden has pledged to fulfill his promise to sign a bill that could lead to TikTok being blocked, accusing it of endangering US national security. Another option is for TikTok to separate from its parent company ByteDance, which originates from China.
If officially signed, this policy would strip away a platform used by Biden and Democratic Party politicians in the 2024 Election campaign to reach young voters, as reported by Reuters on Friday (15/3/2024).
Biden's campaign has garnered thousands of likes on TikTok. The campaign attacks his Republican Party rival, Donald Trump, on Social Security expenditure cuts.
Many netizens commented on the content, but focused on the discourse of TikTok being blocked.
"Fortunately we see this on TikTok," said one netizen.
"How are you going to use this (TikTok) for campaigning if you ban it?" asked another.
Republican Party members of the House of Representatives voted on Wednesday (13/3) to force ByteDance to divest TikTok within 6 months. Otherwise, TikTok will face a ban, which is the biggest threat to the app since the Trump administration.
If the Senate passes the bill, as urged by the White House, Biden has pledged to sign it.
According to political strategy experts, online political discourse in the US, particularly among Democrats, has shifted to TikTok in recent years. The expert noted that X, formerly known as Twitter, has loosened its harassment restrictions under its owner, Elon Musk.
Meanwhile, Facebook has distanced itself from political content. Short video platforms like TikTok are the platform of choice for young Americans to engage in politics.
Most TikTok users are predominantly Democratic Party voters, and this needs to be reconsidered by Biden. Meanwhile, the Trump campaign team does not have an official TikTok account.
"This will have a significant impact on the election because it disrupts the main avenue for young people to communicate with each other," said Michele Weindling, political director of the Sunrise Movement, a youth-focused climate group.
"It will also alienate young voters and make them feel disillusioned," she said.
